Posterior capsular opacification comes in many forms and can be subtle. If pt complaining of vision decline and you aren't sure, send to surgeon for a
consult to determine if a YAG capsulotomy is appropriate.

Maddox rod effect: When the pt describes streaks of light at night that go perpendicular to the striaie you observe. (See Pro Tips on how to identify.)

Pro Tip:

To determine "Maddox Rod effect", have the patient close one eye and shine the transilluminator towards their eye from 16 inches away. Have the patient describe the direction of the starbursts. They will usually be perpendicular to the striaie present.
